When Sir Keir Starmer sat down with Donald Trump at the White House in February, the British prime minister handed over a letter from King Charles III inviting the American president for a state visit to Britain. On July 8th a foreign president set foot in Britain for the first state visit the king has hosted this year. Yet the guest was not Mr Trump but President Emmanuel Macron of France.
